Can't find ground level

I have tried auto levelling and manual levelling to get the pen to draw on paper but it continues to either draw in the air or on one ocassion dig into the surface and lift itself off the table making a loud clicking sound
which had me reaching for the emergency stop. It has been acting erratically like this since I opened the box yesterday for the first time. I haven’t found any trouble shooting info in the instructions and I thought this was supposed to be easy to use?

After you put the text in the correct area, you should debug to the appropriate height and AotuZ records this height.image
